ULEZ reduces non-compliant vehicles by over a third

Transport for London has released figures showing that the number of non-compliant vehicles entering the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) has dropped by over a third during the first four months.

The figures reveal that on weekdays between 7am and 6pm the number of non-compliant vehicles entering the zone has fallen by 12,524 a day, or about 35%, from 35,578 in March to 23,054 in July.

In addition, 14,950 drivers a day paid the 24/7 charge in July, generating around £180,000 per day. At least a further £180,000 per day was also generated by the further 2,791 drivers each day being sent a £130 penalty ticket (discounted to £65 if paid within a fortnight) for failing to pay.

The total income of £51 million since April is £26.3 million less than TfL had expected because the zone has had a greater deterrent effect than first predicted.

The scheme’s success in reducing pollution will be revealed in November when the first figures on air quality are due to be released.

The BVRLA has produced a suite of resources to support members navigating the ULEZ. More information about the scheme, the future expansion plans, and advice for consumers is available on the BRVLA website.
