Review of EV charging sector by Competition and Markets Authority

The BVRLA would like to draw your attention to a review by the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority), which is looking at how to ensure competition between electric vehicle (EV) charging providers while also incentivising investment.

The review of the EV charging sector by the CMA gives an invitation to comment on the questions posed below:

  1. It will consider how to develop a competitive sector whilst incentivising investment, including potential barriers for businesses to enter or expand and other factors impacting competition.
  2. It will look at how consumers will interact with this new and potentially complex sector, the possible challenges facing people when charging and what additional measures may be needed to protect consumers so that mistrust does not become a barrier to roll-out.

As part of the investigation, the CMA will ensure the EV sector is working well for users now and in the future. This is a fantastic opportunity to feedback on any emerging issues/barriers that affect members’ ability to make the transition and to really highlight any areas of competition in need of review.

For information, the connections process is out of scope for this review due to the work being undertaken by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) & Ofgem.

A consultation on the consumer experience of charging is also expected to be launched before Christmas – this will cover issues such as ease of payment, reliability of charge points, data availability and pricing transparency.
