New PACTS report: What does my car do?

The Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS) has published a new report, What does my car do? which calls for global standards to be set for vehicle controls and driver assistance systems.

The lack of full standardisation of vehicle controls and the driver interface with driver assistance systems, means that often drivers are forced to use systems they do not necessarily fully understand. The onset of more vehicle automation may make this worse.

The short report by Dr Shaun Helman at the Transport Research Laboratory and Professor Oliver Carsten at the Institute for Transport Studies, University of Leeds, calls for action through the United Nations Economic Council for Europe (UNECE), which sets global standards. They warn “…if we neglect the user in the brave new world of automated vehicles, we might be heading for a bigger mess.”
