Local authorities urged to take up EV charging funding

The Transport Secretary has written to local authorities urging them to take advantage of funding on offer to build the electric car charging infrastructure and increase local access to charge points.

This coincides with the Department for Transport publishing a league table which shows where public electric car charging infrastructure is available across the UK. Charging device location data for the ‘league table’ is sourced from the electric vehicle charging platform Zap-Map.

Data has revealed that London has the most charging stations with almost 4,000, with good provision also in Glasgow, Manchester and Liverpool. However, the league table also highlights where there are gaps in provision. This supports the findings of the BVRLA’s Road to Zero report card which raised concern about local authority funding and geographical blackspots.

Despite the £5 million funding available, the environment spokesperson at the Local Government Association, Cllr Darren Rodwell, has spoken of a lack of long-term funding acting as a barrier to such investment and has called on the next government to address this at the earliest opportunity.
