Fair Wear & Tear: A handy guide in the glove box

The BVRLA would like to emphasise the importance of making sure customers are aware of their responsibilities regarding the return condition of the vehicle at the start of the contract.

It could be as simple as providing a copy of the BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide for Cars booklet in the glove box, on hand for customers at the start of the lease.

The Guide incorporates the BVRLA Fair Wear & Standard describing the acceptable condition of a vehicle at end of lease. With many customers new to the concept of vehicle leasing, and possibly unsure of their responsibilities in maintaining the vehicle, members should make sure they provide help and support during the period of lease or rental.

With personal contract hire responsible for a growing portion of the BVRLA car fleet, there is a need for extra focus on improving clarity and demonstrating fairness.

The published guide is now in two parts:

  1. Information for drivers about how they can avoid end of lease charges, where they get advice on routine maintenance and servicing, tips on appraising the vehicle at end of lease, what they can expect on the day the vehicle is returned and how to complain if things go wrong.
  2. The BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Standard, focusing on the condition of the vehicle upon return.

Copies of the guide can be ordered online: BVRLA Fair Wear & Tear Guide.
