Companies encouraged to ‘walk the talk’ on green credentials

The Competition and Markets Authority is set to conduct a market review in the coming months to ensure that companies are following its Green Claims Code.

The Green Claims Code was first published in September 2021 with the aim of making it clear for companies to understand what they can and cannot say when making claims about how environmentally friendly their operations are. The review is expected to be conducted in early 2022, with action set to be taken against firms that are not following the guidance.

With six key points highlighted in the Code, companies are encouraged to check their environmental claims against the Green Claims Code to avoid any customers being misled as sustainability increasingly has an influence on purchasing decisions.

Any members wanting to communicate their positive credentials with customers should review the Code ahead of finalising any materials to remain compliant. Formal guidance is also available.
