The UK government has unveiled a £63 million investment (announced on 13 July), aimed at expanding EV charging infrastructure.
Split across cross-pavement solution, depot and fleet grants, and electrifying the NHS, the move comes under the Government’s ‘Plan for Change’ initiative to make EV ownership more accessible and sustainable.
The £63m is split as follows:
Cross‑pavement home charging |
£25 million |
Enables curb side EV charging via under‑pavement cable gullies - benefiting homes without off‑street parking - saving drivers up to £1,500 a year |
Depot & fleet charging grants |
£30 million |
Businesses including HGV, van, and coach operators can install chargers at depots, accelerating electrification of commercial fleets. |
NHS fleet electrification |
£8 million |
Funding for chargepoints at more than 200 NHS sites to support ambulances and medical vehicles, freeing up funds for patient care. |
Additionally, major roads will soon feature official EV‑charging signage to make rapid charging hubs more visible - helping drivers locate stations without planning it in advance.
Core elements of these changes have formed part of the BVRLA’s ongoing conversations with the departments responsible for their roll out. To see positive movement in this space is encouraging and are expected to support members and their customers in their decarbonisation efforts.
The association will share more specifics of the relevant criteria as soon as they are confirmed.
