FOS reports fall in case levels

The Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has reported a 9% fall in complaints in the first three months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. 68,000 complaints were processed in Q1, with year-on-year reductions seen across cases regarding current accounts, credit cards and motor insurance.

Larger drops in volume were seen in ‘perceived irresponsible and unaffordable lending’, which saw complaint numbers halve.

The update from FOS references the introduction of charges for professional representatives who raise more than 10 complaints each year. For the period in question, a 16% reduction in cases raised by professional representatives is shown, with the Service anticipating a further decrease in later reports.
