DVSA advice on HGV emission control systems

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency has recently found several hired HGVs with emission control system modifications.

This includes emulators that switch off the Adblue system which can result in HGVs producing up to 20 times more dangerous emissions.

The DVSA has been randomly checking vehicles for this type of modification. Drivers caught with an emissions cheat device or a faulty emissions control system have ten days to remove the device and repair their emissions system. If they continue to use a device or fail to repair the system, they can be fined £300 and have their vehicle taken off the road.

The BVRLA is recommending that members build in checks for their HGVs before and after each rental.

Without checks, it is possible that a previous hirer could have fitted a device to a vehicle and then members or future hirers would not be aware of the existence of the device.
