BVRLA asks the Chancellor to support the rental sector

The BVRLA and six of its largest car rental members have written to Chancellor Rishi Sunak to ask that the sector benefits from the same temporary 5% VAT rate that he applied to the hospitality and attractions industry last week.

In the letter, we made the case that the vehicle rental sector has been amongst the hardest hit during this crisis, as it is particularly reliant on the revenue from airport branches and leisure-based travel. Members have seen reductions of up to 90% in their leisure activity. Despite this, branches have remained open to meet the transport needs of key workers or ensure the delivery of essential goods services.

The Chancellor was asked to give serious consideration to supporting car rental with a VAT reduction, in readiness for the sector playing a vital role in enabling Britons to explore the UK as part of their 2020 ‘staycation’ plans.
