Update on Northern Ireland Protocol

The Government has published a Written Ministerial Statement to provide an update on the standstill approach to the Northern Ireland Protocol.

The statement confirms that the Government will continue to operate the NI Protocol on the current basis. Current processes for moving goods between GB and NI will continue to be administered as they have been up to this point. The Government has committed to ensuring that reasonable notice is provided if any of these arrangements are to change, to enable businesses to make appropriate preparations.

In respect of HM Revenue & Custom’s existing processes for post and parcels and use of the UK Trader Scheme by businesses who do not fulfil the fixed place of business requirement, this means that current arrangements will continue. The existing arrangements for post and parcels will not end on 1 October 2021, and the easement for the UK Trader Scheme will not end on 31 October 2021.
