Repair prices rise but BEV service costs cheaper

Analysis of over 12,000 extended warranty claims paid by Intelligent Motoring, covering 31 makes and 144 models of vehicle, confirms the average price of a repair during January to June 2021 was £279 compared to £372 in the same period of 2022.

Ongoing supply chain issues, rising energy and fuel prices and a shortfall in skilled motor technicians are powering motorists’ service, maintenance, and repair woes. And this trend is likely to worsen according to the Motor Ombudsman. Some 63% of independent garages and franchised dealer workshops surveyed by the Motor Ombudsman have said they will be looking to increase prices to stay afloat after a difficult opening six months of 2022.

Meanwhile, the average transaction value of a service for a battery electric vehicle (BEV) is currently about 22% less than an equivalent internal combustion engine (ICE) car, new data from Fleet Assist suggests.

Much of this can be put down to reduced labour times which are currently 33% shorter for BEVs than ICE cars, according to analysis of 850,000 fleet cars and vans using Fleet Assist’s 5,200-strong franchised and independent garage network.

The parts component of a BEV job is also typically 28% cheaper than an ICE car due to them having fewer working parts, with brake wear far lower.

SMR data shows that the current most common BEV parts replaced are pollen filters, bulbs, key fob batteries, wipers and brake fluid.
