London Assembly calls for car club expansion

The London Assembly has unanimously agreed a motion calling on the Mayor to work with Transport for London (TfL) and London’s Boroughs to collectively expand the use of car clubs.

This Assembly is strongly supportive of car clubs and recognises the role they play in helping to improve air quality and reduce congestion.

This Assembly notes that CoMoUK’s 2020 London Car Club Annual Report found that each car club vehicle in London takes 23.5 vehicles off the road.

This Assembly would therefore like to see the expansion of car club use in London and calls on the Mayor to work with TfL and London’s boroughs to assess what blocks are preventing their expansion and to work together to remove them.

Last month, the BVRLA and CoMoUK wrote to the Mayor to request an open discussion about the future of the Capital’s transport network, calling for an evaluation of the positive role rental and car clubs can play in reducing congestion and emissions in London.

With TfL data showing that one in five cars in London will not comply with the tight emissions standards of the extended Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the BVRLA and CoMoUK urged TfL to work with alternatives to privately owned vehicles. BVRLA rental and car club members' vehicles are 100% ULEZ compliant, providing drivers with an accessible, affordable, and green way to complete their journeys within the extended zone.

The BVRLA will continue to work to encourage TfL and the Mayor to work with rental and car clubs in London. If members would like to hear more about this work, please contact [email protected].

CoMoUK has announced that its 2021 annual car club survey is now live. This unique national survey provides the sector with valuable data on the impacts of car clubs, helping it to understand travel behaviour and to improve services.

The survey will remain open until Monday 20 December, with a chance to win one of five £50 vouchers in a special prize draw plus a range of driver credit offers for those who take part. The results will be compiled into a report early next year.
