Quarterly Leasing Survey (2017 Q1)

BVRLA business fleet leasing sector (contract hire and finance lease for cars and vans) is reported at 1,345,000, an increase of 6.5% year on year.

BVRLA business fleet leasing sector (contract hire and finance lease for cars and vans) is reported at 1,345,000, an increase of 6.5% year on year.

Total car leasing fleet (all leasing types) grew by 11% year-on-year, with PCH contributing over half of the growth, and business fleet leasing (contract hire and finance lease) just less than one quarter (24%).

There are some signs that the pace of growth in both car contract hire and personal contract hire is beginning to slow.

The average fleet emissions of cars added to the BVRLA fleet has declined in every quarter year on year since the BVRLA leasing survey was established. The rate of decline, however, is decreasing. BVRLA fleet remains substantially cleaner than national averages.

The proportion of the total fleet in VED Bands A and B continues to rise, this quarter Band C grew by 0.7% and Band I grew by 0.1%. All other bands fell.

The proportion of diesel in total fleet continues to decline, replaced by petrol. The long term growth in demand for plug-in hybrids continues.

In the two surveys conducted in the second half of 2016 (both surveys measured after the outcome of the Brexit was known), the direction of travel in all but one confidence measure was positive. In the first quarter of 2017 survey (survey conducted after the general election had been announced), the direction has changed but not by enough to offset improvements in the previous two quarters. Members are slightly more pessimistic about the economy in general, the fleet leasing sector and profit margins, and less optimistic about fleet sizes over the next six months. Their pessimism regarding the outlook over the next six months for used car values remained unchanged.
