Funding boost for on-street electric car charging

The new Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps has announced that government is committing an extra £2.5 million for electric vehicle charge points on residential streets, doubling the funding for on-street charging.

The funding will support the on-street residential chargepoint scheme, launched in 2017, which helps people access charging infrastructure near their homes when they don’t have off-street parking.

The allocation of funding for on-street residential charge points is part of the £1.5 billion investment underpinned by the Road to Zero Strategy. As part of this, the government is also investing £37 million into British engineering to develop electric charge point infrastructure that could rapidly expand the UK charge point network for people without off-street parking

One of the BVRLA’s recommendations in the Road to Zero Report Card published in June, was that government needed to address the public charging ‘blackspots’ across the country. Read the 16-page summary or the full 64-page report on the BVRLA website.
