BVRLA is runner-up in national Counter Terror Award

The BVRLA has finished as runner-up at the national 2020 Counter Terror Awards having been shortlisted in the Transport Security Award category for its work on the Rental Vehicle Security Scheme.

Heathrow Airport took the award for its deployment of a bespoke set of anti-drone systems, designed to block unmanned aerial vehicles from entering its airspace following a string of recent attempts.

Counter Terror Magazine, the organisers of the awards, explained their importance:

“The Counter Terror Awards acknowledge excellence in the global fight against terrorism. Since 2018, organisations and individuals from the UK and overseas have been recognised across 20 categories for their contributions to reducing the threat of global terrorism.”

The voluntary RVSS scheme, launched in December 2018, was introduced by the Department for Transport to help mitigate the risk of vehicle terrorism following a spate of attacks in 2017 where vehicles were used as weapons.

In its 2018 National Counter-Terrorism Strategy, the UK Government outlined its commitment to working with the vehicle rental sector on measures to improve counter-terrorism security and the BVRLA has led the sector’s response ever since, incorporating compliance with the RVSS into the association’s mandatory Code of Conduct in January 2020.
