Mayor asks manufacturers to contribute cash to improve air quality

Release Date:

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has written to three of the largest German automotive manufacturers asking them to contribute to the London air quality fund.

In his letter, the Mayor accused BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen of ‘double standards’ following reports that the manufacturers paid a total of £223 million to Germany’s Sustainable Mobility Fund for Cities throughout 2017, but have not contributed anything to the UK.

Khan said: “In July, the UK managing director of VW sat in my office and said they couldn’t contribute anything to fund cleaning up London’s air, but their German colleagues are providing money. Londoners will find that unacceptable.”

More information about what is being done to tackle air quality in London can be found on the Mayor of London website.
