Several BVRLA members have reported an increase in the number of vehicle thefts being carried out by gangs targeting rental vehicles. Being aware of some of the typical behaviours of these gangs will help members to protect their vehicles.
-
Targeted vehicles: premium vehicles are most commonly at risk, specifically Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz models
-
Booking conditions: Last-minute bookings – often for collection on the same or following day – coupled with short-term rental periods of just one or two days
-
Document and Payment red flags: The renter often attempts to pay with a debit card, even though a credit card may be presented. Fraudulent documents are also commonplace, notably counterfeit or stolen driver’s licences, passports or proof of address
-
Operational indicators: It is common for there to be inconsistencies in the travel information shared and the terms of the booking. For example, legitimate-looking travel information (eg: Flight details for Gatwick Airport) does not complement the locations of hire (eg: pick up from Heathrow Airport)
Members are reminded of the importance of checking documentation for signs of fraud and to observe caution when completing handovers. The RISC database should be used to alert other members to any hirers who have attempted to steal vehicles.
