Sharing the Road: How Drivers and Cyclists Can Coexist Safely

As roads grow busier and more people turn to cycling for travel and leisure, ensuring safe interactions between drivers and cyclists is more important than ever. In response, IAM Roadsmart has shared some tips for sharing the road safely this summer.

Key Tips for Drivers

  • Keep Your Distance: Leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists at speeds up to 30mph - more at higher speeds.
  • Be Patient and Observant: Cyclists may need to swerve to avoid hazards. Always check mirrors and blind spots before turning or changing lanes.
  • Brake Gently: Avoid sudden stops that could endanger cyclists riding behind you.
  • Use the Dutch Reach: Open your car door with the opposite hand to naturally look over your shoulder for cyclists.
  • Understand the Hierarchy of Road Users: The Highway Code now prioritises vulnerable users - pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders - recognising their increased risk in collisions.
  • Riding Two Abreast Is Legal: Cyclists may ride two by two for safety, especially in groups or with children.

Essential Advice for Cyclists

  • Stay Visible: Wear reflective clothing and use bike lights, especially in low light.
  • Follow the Rules: Obey traffic lights, signs, and road markings like any other vehicle.
  • Use Cycle Lanes: When available, these offer a safer route.
  • Signal Clearly: Use hand signals to communicate your intentions to other road users.
  • Ride Predictably: Keep a steady line and avoid sudden movements.

Shared Responsibilities

  • Avoid Distractions: Whether on two wheels or four, stay alert and focused.
  • Practice Courtesy: A small gesture of thanks can make a big difference in road harmony.
  • Respect Each Other’s Needs: Cyclists are legitimate road users and deserve space, time, and understanding.
