Moving traffic offences: enforcement is getting closer

Last week the BVRLA’s Director of Fleet Services, Amanda Brandon, was a panellist on a webinar that discussed the new parking enforcement powers which will shortly be introduced. Hosted by the British Parking Association, the webinar was attended by 100 representatives from councils outside London.

The new powers will allow councils to issue penalty charge notices for moving traffic offences such as stopping in a yellow box junction, banned right turns and many others.

When introducing the new powers, councils will be required to issue a warning letter for a first offence in the first six months that the new regime is in place.  Where possible, members should forward warning letters to the driver or customer if known to them. As this isn’t always possible the BVRLA has requested more information as to which councils are thinking of introducing these new powers.

The BVRLA will share details of the councils applying for the new powers in due course. Wider communication can then be carried out by members to alert customers that new enforcement powers are in place. It is likely that councils will start enforcement in August/September this year, however, only ten councils have applied for the powers so this should be a gradual introduction.
