Government considers green number plates for EVs

Today the Government has launched a consultation on the prospect of introducing green number plates for electric vehicles, as part of its drive to increase take up.

The number plates, which could be either partially or completely coloured green, would be issued to electric vehicles and could help local authorities easily identify these vehicles to help deliver benefits such as bus lane use and cheaper parking.

It is also hoped that the number plates will make these vehicles more visible on the road and encourage greater uptake amongst motorists.

A similar scheme is already in place in the Norwegian capital Oslo, where electric vehicles can be identified by the "e" at the start of each number plate. These vehicles park for free in some public car parks which are loaded with charging points.

A consultation on this scheme is open to responses from industry and the public until 14th January 2020. For further information, including details of how to respond, visit the Gov.uk website.
