From 1 September 2025, motorists using the Dartford Crossing will face higher charges as part of efforts to alleviate congestion.
Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for the Future of Roads, announced in the House of Commons on 17 June that usage has grown by 7.5% since 2014. The Crossing now serves up to 180,000 vehicles daily, exceeding its 135,000-vehicle design capacity.

Night-time crossings (10 pm–6 am), motorcycles, and cyclists remain exempt.
With traffic congestion spilling onto the M25 and affecting nearby communities, the Government argues that the increased charge aims to manage demand and enhance crossing efficiency. The announcement comes alongside confirmed funding for the £9.2 billion Lower Thames Crossing, designed to relieve pressure on the Dartford route.
