Don’t TRIP up this Winter

National Highways’ winter ‘Safe T.R.I.P. Checks’ campaign launched last week with a focus on the ‘P’ for Prepare. This season, National Highways is encouraging drivers to be prepared for winter, not caught out by it. There are straightforward, proactive steps drivers can take to stay safe and confident when faced with heavy rain, snow, or ice.

Winter breakdowns on motorways and major A roads have risen by 21% over the last five years, with more than 67,000 incidents recorded between December 2024 and February 2025 alone. Slippery roads due to the weather continue to be one of the leading causes of serious incidents each winter.

National Highways is encouraging drivers to take proactive steps to plan their journeys. Drivers are encouraged to plan journeys in advance by checking the route, traffic updates, and weather conditions, and make sure the vehicle is topped up with fuel, fluids, and charge. For winter travel, carry essentials such as an ice scraper, torch, warm clothing, blankets, snacks, water, a charged phone, and jump leads to stay prepared in case of a breakdown.
