The BVRLA has published an updated edition of its Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) Fair Wear and Tear Guide, providing clearer standards and guidance for managing vans through to time of return.

Commenting on the updated Guide, Amanda Brandon, BVRLA Director of Member Engagement, said: “Vans are the workhorses of the UK economy, with one in ten workers depending on them across a wide range of industries. Ensuring they are properly maintained is essential, and our updated LCV Fair Wear and Tear Guide supports members and their customers in doing just that.

“The Guide provides clear, consistent standards to help manage vehicles throughout their lease or flexi-rental lifecycle. It plays a crucial role in minimising disputes, supporting efficient de-fleeting, and ensuring vans are remarketed quickly and confidently to their next user.”

The new Guide introduces updated guidance and additional clarification on key areas, including:

  • All keys must be present and in working order
  • Electric or hybrid vehicles must be returned with damage-free charging cables
  • Panel cracking or deviations from the original shape are not acceptable
  • Vehicles with wraps or emblems must follow leasing company guidance on removal
  • Clearer definitions and visual examples of uneven tyre wear.

The Guide is available to BVRLA members as a hard copy version or digital asset. Fleet operators are encouraged to understand how the Guide is applied, and that they and their vehicle provider are clear of the respective responsibilities throughout the contract.
