BVRLA hosts government’s Clean Air Zone portal demo day

BVRLA members have been selected to take part in a demonstration by government’s Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) showcasing a centralised Clean Air Zone portal that is under development for launch on 2 January 2020.

Three separate sessions took place with members from rental, leasing, commercial vehicle and fleet companies; all of whom expressed positive feedback and were grateful for the opportunity to ask questions and help shape the portal as it is further developed.

JAQU, established by Defra and the Department for Transport to coordinate delivery of the Government’s plans for achieving NO2 compliance, gave a demonstration of the vehicle checker, a web tool that will allow motorists to enter a vehicle registration number to determine if they will incur a charge for entering a Clean Air Zone.

JAQU were keen to hear from members on current charging schemes such as the DART and congestion charge and the main feedback was that any system implemented needs to be simple and efficient with the ability to check multiple vehicles at the same time.

The BVRLA will continue to engage with JAQU as the portal is further developed, including a centralised payment portal where a motorist can pay the charge for entering a Clean Air Zone.

The associations will also look at some of the issues raised regarding engagement with local authorities, who are looking at implementing charging Clean Air Zones.
