The latest registration figures published by the SMMT show that zero emission vehicles were up almost fivefold in August, now representing a record 3.4% market share.
Car registrations fell overall by -1.6% with just 1,521 fewer cars registered than in the same month last year.
Registrations from both the private and fleet sectors declined, down -1.7% and -3.5% respectively.
Meanwhile, diesel registrations fell for the 29th month in a row, down -12.2%, while petrol remained stable, up 1%.
