£200m funding announced for truck transition

The Department for Transport (DfT) has announced a further £200m of funding to support the transition to all new HGVs being zero emission by 2040. In addition to the funding, DfT is seeking further evidence on exemptions that are required for use cases that can't meet existing timelines.

The announcements followed the Government’s formal response to the previous consultation, which acknowledged the vital role that the UK’s road freight system plays in keeping the economy mobile, while reiterating the need to have ambitious targets.

In recognition of the complexity of use cases – a point repeatedly made by the BVRLA and its members – the government has published a supplementary call for evidence regarding how exemptions will be applied.

The current phase-out date for the sale of new, zero-emission HGVs weighing less than, or equal to, 26 tonnes is 2035. This call for evidence seeks to recognise use cases where the transition is not possible within that timeline.
