Van operators reminded of restrictions at the Rotherhithe Tunnel

Transport for London (TfL) is reminding BVRLA members of the importance of advising customers of the Rotherhithe Tunnel restrictions following concerns that customers are flouting rules and incurring fines.

Vehicles more than two metres (6'6") high, two metres (6'6") wide or goods vehicles weighing more than two tonnes gross vehicle weight (GVW) are not permitted to travel through the Rotherhithe Tunnel.

A Ford Transit Connect, for example, has a GVW of around 2 tonnes, so customers would need to check the weight of the added load, so they know that if an alternative route to the tunnel is required.

Members should make sure they advise customers of the weight and height of vans. This is a BVRLA Code of Conduct requirement for commercial vehicles and compliance can be achieved by providing information in the vehicle, on the rental agreement, on an app or website.

The reason for the weight restriction at the tunnel is due to serious safety concerns and need for repairs.

Rotherhithe Tunnel restriction details are on the TFL website.
