MOT consultation date extended

The Department for Transport (DfT) has extended the current MOT consultation deadline date from 28 February to 22 March, giving the industry longer to respond.

Under consideration in the MOT testing review are the frequency of tests and changes required to reflect the popularity of EVs and hybrids.

DfT is seeking views on MOT testing for cars, motorbikes, and vans. Safety will remain a critical factor in any proposed changes, although costs to motorists, vehicle technology, and emissions will also be carefully considered as part of the process.

One of the main changes under review is whether a vehicle’s first MOT should be due after four years, not the three currently in place. The DfT is also considering what, if any, testing should be conducted on EV batteries.

The BVRLA will formally respond to the consultation to represent member views. Members are encouraged to share any comments on the proposed changes with the team by emailing [email protected]

See the consultation on the GOV.UK website. The consultation closes on 22 March at 11.45pm.
