Help shape the future of self-driving passenger services

The Government has launched a public consultation on the upcoming Automated Passenger Services (APS) permitting scheme, which will set the legal framework for how self-driving taxis, private hire vehicles, and bus-style services operate once they hit the roads.

The consultation, opened by Future of Roads Minister Lilian Greenwood on 21 July, invites feedback from both the public and industry on making these services safe, accessible and well-regulated before the first deployments begin in 2026.

The full rollout will be supported by the Automated Vehicles Act, expected to be implemented from late 2027.

This is a chance to influence how future transport services could complement or compete with existing fleets, especially in underserved areas.
