National Highways Autumn TRIP campaign

National Highways’ autumn T.R.I.P. campaign recently launched, with a focus on the “I” for Inspect. This season, it is encouraging drivers to check their tyres before long journeys, supporting Tyre Safety Month in October.

As weather conditions worsen, tyre safety becomes critical. Worn, underinflated, or damaged tyres are a major cause of collisions and breakdowns, accounting for more than 53,000 recorded breakdowns on major roads in 2024 – nearly one in five. The campaign warns that too many drivers neglect basic checks: 55% don’t check tread depth, and almost half (48%) admit they don’t always check pressure. The consequences are severe. More than 190 people were killed or seriously injured in 2023 in tyre-related collisions.

Beyond safety, tyre issues cause delays and road closures – meaning lost time and added stress.

National Highways is raising awareness of tyre ratings and providing guidance on labelling to help drivers choose tyre replacements. It is developing accessible resources to support disabled drivers with essential vehicle checks.

The TRIP guidance:

Top-up
Top up fuel, oil, and screen wash levels

Rest
Take a break, every two hours

Inspect
Your tyres and check your lights are clean and working

Prepare
For bad weather and low sun, carry essentials, including sunglasses.
