The BVRLA has welcomed the announcement by the Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, that the region is to become the UK’s first Future Mobility city.
The BVRLA has welcomed the announcement by the Mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, that the region is to become the UK’s first Future Mobility city.
Speaking at Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham on Sunday the Mayor revealed £20m is to be invested to enable Transport West Midlands to work with companies to trial and demonstrate new modes of transport, services and technology. This will include investment in mobility as a service, car sharing, electric bikes and using data to tackle congestion.
Responding to the Mayor’s speech, Secretary of state for transport Chris Grayling added:
“We will create an environment where new technologies and services can be deployed, giving passengers more choice than ever before. Whether you’re travelling to work or training or education, all will benefit from the innovation to come.”
Commenting on the announcement, BVRLA Chief Executive, Gerry Keaney said:
“We are delighted by the announcement of the first Future Mobility Area by Andy Street today. We look forward to working with the Mayor on new and innovative schemes including our mobility credits proposal. Our industry is the fastest way to cleaner air and we will continue to work with central and local government to deliver on this key priority.
“The fleet sector is determined to play a lead role in tackling air pollution and this announcement has the potential to dramatically improve the sustainability of road transport in the West Midlands.
“We believe that this announcement must be the start of a wider transition in urban transport and we look forward to collaborating with the West Midlands and other local authorities in delivering this.”
