Penalties incurred abroad

BVRLA members may start to see an increase in penalties incurred by customers taking their vehicles abroad.

BVRLA members may start to see an increase in penalties incurred by customers taking their vehicles abroad.

This is largely because since 6 May 2017, the DVLA has been required to provide overseas authorities with registered keeper details of vehicles involved in safety-related offences, including:

• Speeding
• Drink/drug driving
• Seatbelt/crash helmet
• Red light/forbidden lane
• Mobile phone offences

The BVRLA advises that members should provide details of who the vehicle has been hired/leased to if the contract allows, and should inform the customer at the earliest convenience.

There is no formal transfer of liability process so if the authority continues to liaise with the leasing or rental company rather than the driver, then members may need to pay the penalty and recharge the customer accordingly.

Further advice is available to members in the BVRLA’s fact sheet on taking vehicles abroad.
