Latest SMMT figures show plug-in hybrids taking a hit

Against the backdrop of a -4.1% decline in the new car market last month, zero-emission plug-in hybrids show a fall of a third whilst the overall alternatively-fuelled vehicles market increased by 12.3%.

The figures, published by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show new registrations by private motorists fell by -10.3% and fleet demand remained stable, up 2.9% on the previous month.

The strong start to the year continues for the new van market which was up 4.7% in April. Market incentives and new models have helped to drive demand for small and large vans, both up 8.8% and 6.9% respectively.
