Government seeks views on Automated Lane Keeping Systems

The Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV) is consulting on any potential legislation or regulation it needs to put in place to support the introduction of Automated Lane Keeping Systems, which can take control of a vehicle at low speeds, keeping it in lane on motorways.

The consultation, which closes on 27 October 2020, asks about the allocation of legal responsibility between the driver and the car when the feature when is engaged; and about compliance with traffic rules.

When submitting a response, the BVRLA will also share this with the Law Commission as it prepares for the third stage of its consultations on autonomous vehicles. This will consider the broader implications for the meaning of ‘self-driving’ and what systems should be listed under the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act. The Law Commission consultation is due towards the end of the year.
