You’ll want to identify those customers who may pose a risk to your company. Using the BVRLA’s RISC database, which contains details of over 10,000 individuals and companies, will help you make an informed decision. The system enables rental companies to legitimately share risk information with other BVRLA members in order to gather information about prospective renters. Some of the things RISC can help protect your business against include:

  • Customer fraud
  • Theft
  • Unauthorised extensions
  • Late payments
  • Abusive behaviour

Using RISC can make your business less susceptible to vehicle theft and unauthorised extensions, which in turn could save you money on your insurance premiums.

2012 RISC trends

Analysis from statistics collected from 2012 showed the number of notifications averaged 122 notifications a month. In 2012 the total number of searches conducted by RISC members reached 322,379 - a 71% increase compared to the previous year. The number of companies who use RISC doubled over the course of 2012 and the BVRLA intends to continue that growth into 2013.

How does RISC work?

The BVRLA RISC Online website, has several features. It's simple to use, allows instant updates and can be quickly accessed by any Internet browser.

The RISC database can also be fully integrated via in-house and proprietary counter systems. This means that all renters can be qualified against risk information without the need for re-keying data or exiting from a rental software application.

RISC is not a ‘Do Not Rent’ system – it simply provides you with relevant information about your renter, so you can make an informed decision.

What about the legal aspects?

RISC is registered under the Data Protection Act 1998 and is strictly regulated by the BVRLA, which means that subscribers can use and share data with confidence. When notifying us of individual customers that have caused a problem, you just have to be certain that the information you are providing is accurate and that you comply with the RISC User Obligations.

Data subjects

If you have been refused a rental due to being on the BVRLA RISC Online database, as a data subject you have the right to find out what information is being held about you under the Data Protection Act.

To obtain a copy of this data we require evidence of your identity in the form of a written request and a payment of £10 in accordance with the provisions of the Data Protection Act to:
