The London low emission zone (LEZ) came into operation on the 4 February 2008. The scheme aims to reduce emissions of diesel-powered commercial vehicles in London by imposing a charge to those vehicles that do not meet the required emission standards.
Due to the problems with long lead in times affecting the availability of EURO IV goods vehicles, the BVRLA along with other industry representatives successfully lobbied for the LEZ standard to be EURO III until 2012 rather than 2010 for goods vehicles being operated in the LEZ.
The BVRLA is currently lobbying Transport for London (TfL) to amend the definition of van which is proposed under the scheme. The definition of a van is one that is between 1.205 tonnes unladen and 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, this definition is not commonly known and will be difficult for van users to determine whether or not they need to comply. We are therefore proposing that TfL look for a more common definition.
